Depression is real, it affects many people in The United States, and the world over. The causes are many, and they range from personal experiences, to possibly even genetic disposition.
When I saw this image displayed above, I understood what was being portrayed. However, even with that understanding, I found myself thinking that “It’s all in their head, they can beat this if they really want to.”
Of course, the truth is, it’s not that simple. This is just my knee jerk reaction, and my “I can achieve anything” tough guy attitude kicking in. Logically, I know that it’s not that simple.
In my own personal experience, I have actually used perspective as a way of overcoming depression and sadness. Even when I suffered my greatest loss to date, which was my dad dying, I used perspective as a tool to cope with the grief. I said things to myself like “He was 73 years old, he lived a long life.” Which is actually true. Though he was never wealthy, or lived “the good life,” he lived a long life, and faired off much better than children who die at 3 years old of cancer. See? Perspective.
At times, when people are sharing their woes with me, I’ve tried to give them this perspective mindset as a tool in overcoming their specific issues. Everyone copes with things their own way, and I don’t think that my method has actually worked for many people. They have to find their own way of coping.
I get the point of this picture, and though I’ve never said what the guy said, I will say this, don’t underestimate the power of self reasoning and perspective. It worked for me, and it may work for you.
