Insecurities manifest themselves in men, women, and even young children. This is often because of ego, pride, and or a lack of self confidence. Your life experiences, knowledge, education and many other factors determine on how you personally handle these insecurities.
When someone else is doing well, be it your partner, an old friend, or anyone else, that doesn’t take away from you. It does not diminish your accomplishments, and this should not be a reason for you to feel insecure. The problem with people is that humans are insecure, that’s just a fact of life. We tend to feel inferior if someone is doing better than we are. For some reason, this makes us feel threatened.
I am no exception to these feelings, and on occasion I catch myself heading down that very same path!
For instance, yesterday when I was doing step class, I had a moment. The last 20 percent of the routine, is still unknown to me, but one guy was killing the routine. Clearly, he’s been doing step at a high level for a while, and he knows the instructors routine. So what was my initial reaction to seeing this guy doing so great?
I thought to myself “What a freaking show boater!” I wanted to get off my step, and go slap this guy in the face for acting so damn cocky. I instantly didn’t like the his attitude. But what did he do to me? Why was I angry at him? Did this guy even realize that I was there?
You see my point? I had absolutely no reason to feel this way. This was my own lack of self confidence with that last bit of the routine making itself manifest. This is my issue, and not his problem at all. It’s funny how these insecurities can surface even in a step class, and whether or not you acknowledge it, we all have them in some way, shape, or form.
The key to growing is to recognize that this is your issue, acknowledge it, know that the world doesn’t give a damn about you, and move forward. Naturally, that’s the tricky part, but being aware is half the battle!Share:
