I’ve been to many shows over the years. During my time in the poetry scene, my time as a yelper, and over my life in general. I can tell you hands down, with the backing of my many years of amateur show review critic expertise, (basically I ain’t shit) that Q is one of the most amazing, committed, convincing, captivating performers I have ever seen. Now don’t let my self deprecating intro take away from the factual nature of my follow up statement, Q is amazing, and Intrusion, the newest play by Qurrat Ann Kadwani brings that once again to the stage.
If you’ve seen “They call me Q,” you’ve already had a taste of her talent. Perhaps you’ve come across her work on tv, corporate videos, or even her youtube channel where she talks about current events and the sort? What stands out most to me about Q as a performer is how convincing and intense she can be in whatever role it is that she is playing. Usually, that is more than one role.
Intrusion is no exception, she played 8 characters in one hour! Though its only her on stage, she does a great job, through the use of her talents, props, and conversation to create an entire community. She pulls you into the world that she has created, and you really believe that there are “conversations” happening, meanwhile, it’s only one person on stage. She’s amazing.
Intrusion couldn’t have come out at a better time, something that Q herself pointed out during a brief Q&A after the fundraiser opening of her play. The play deals with a time where rape has allegedly been eradicated from society. However, we soon learn that this is not truly the case, and the entire fabric of this new society hangs in the wind.
We meet activists, children, politicians, psychologists, and several other characters throughout the play. Q is captivating and really will strike a chord as you watch this play. She is currently preparing to take it on a college tour, and if she comes your way, I strongly encourage you to take the time to watch this play, it’s totally worth the time, and deals with a topic that many of us are still coming to terms with in our society.
We wish Q all the best on this tour, and continued success in her career. She truly is a wizard at her craft.
