Here is what the kid was said to be doing:

- attempting to break a large glass item
- knocked over a book shelf, injuring principal
- throwing items
- trashing about on the floor and screaming
- biting a door knob
- resisting when the officer asked the child to calm down

The quote I found most hilarious came from the child’s mother:

“Well, you know, kids have mood swings. Just like adults and other kids, they have good days, and they have bad days”.

WHAT? Getting a c on an exam is a bad day! Getting told to quiet down during class is a bad day! But getting a police officer to the point where they feel they have to cuff you, for your safety, as well as everyone else’s? That madame I’ll say is well beyond a bad day!

Public opinion on the matter is mixed, of course a good deal of parents will be appalled at this, the horror of a 6 year old being in handcuffs. The child’s life is ruined now, oh no, poor traumatized baby. She just had a bad day. “It hurted” she is quoted as saying.

Others stand by the decision of calling the police by the principal. Citing the first items I thought of “What do you think would have happened if the principal tried to physically remove the child from the glass she was trying to smash? Do you think the parent would say ‘Hey, she was trying to keep my daughter from getting sliced up, thank you’. Hell no! They would of said ‘You had no right to touch my child, I’m suing the school’! You and I know it! That’s exactly what would have happened!”

Oh, and the little girl is black, I’m not sure what race the principal is, but make her white, and have her touch the kid! WHAT! It’s because she is black! RACISM!

In fact I have already seen/received a few messages to that effect, “the police arrested her because she’s black”. Really? Well, the racist are really dialing it in now, get them started young right? It had nothing to do with the fact she could KILL HERSELF or injure others in the process of her destruction of public property?

Check out a CNN article on this situation.

You also have the mental health advocates saying that there are ways to deal with mentally challenged children. Assuming something is wrong with her in the psychological aspect. Perhaps, but if this child has issues that run that severely, she probably should be in a place where the staff is better prepared to deal with this type of unruly behavior. A place with no sharp objects, no glass, etc. Teachers are there to teach, not perform psychiatric treatment.

Look, I’m a father, I’m not heartless. I know this is a child, but like someone said “this couldn’t have been the first incident, and if that’s the case, I’m sure the parents knew about it”. My own son, who is well behaved as it is, would be terrified if a cop was called on his behalf. This kid wasn’t phased. What does that say? Special help is required.

The kid had been expelled after the incident, but later invited back to the school. However the parents have since then transferred the kid out of the school in question. The police dropped about 3 charges against the kid due to her age.

I read several articles today, all involving the George Zimmerman trial. All of them asking the common question “Can George Zimmerman get a fair trial”?

Several points were raised:

- Could a parent of a black child provide a fair verdict when even the president of the United States seems to have something to say? “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon Martin”.

- Would a juror feel safe in handing out a not guilty verdict when they know that their names, home addresses and appearance would be revealed after the trial?

Even the judge has been reported for replacement as she is connected to the case as one of her husband’s legal partners reports as an analyst on CNN.

They have established that locally at least, in Sanford, Florida, a fair trial is not going to happen.

A few of my friends have take issue with me because “I have supposedly sided with Zimmerman”. So even I, as a Blogger have experienced some backlash.

Allow me to clarify, I have not sided with Zimmerman, I have sided with allowing the facts to come out, I have sided with right and wrong.

People appear to be very divided by race, plenty of people had already deemed Zimmerman guilty or innocent, long before any facts came out, or at this point have come out. Last I heard that little file containing evidence is sealed, and not available as of yet. So how can you have reached a conclusion?

That’s the problem I have. If you read my earlier blog posts, you’ll see that initially, based on what I heard in the media, I too was biased against Zimmerman. At some point or another I realized that I didn’t have all the facts, and it was unfair of me to judge without facts.

I read this article on a Florida government website. I’m educating myself because I am obtaining this permit, and knowledge is important when getting into areas such as this.

This also makes very clear the rights that George Zimmerman had when discharging his weapon against Trayvon Martin.

Here is the question: Was Trayvon on top of Zimmerman, smashing his head on the floor as he claims he was. If the answer to that is yes, then legally, he will be acquitted. Reason being, how many times can a man’s head be slammed into the floor before “seriously bodily harm occurs.”

One major question I have is the following: Who was heard screaming for help that day during the 911 call? I’m surprised that in today’s day and age they can’t prove whose voice that is. That would answer alot of questions. If that does indeed turn out to be Trayvon Martin as was initially thought, this guy is done. He deserves exactly what would be coming to him.

The only way Zimmerman is innocent, is if his story is true.

Rioters, you should note the laws below, read them carefully and gain an understanding. I decided to share this article because of its simplicity. Even the most unreasonable, passion driven rioter can make sense of this simple, plain english.

On a separate note, I have a question for the law people: the law states you can use deadly force to “prevent” a forcible crime. Forcible crimes are those such as rape, child molestation, etc.

It specifically states that if the criminal is retreating, you can no longer prevent the crime, thereby use of deadly force is not authorized. Meaning if you see a rapist running, you can shoot him in the back.

But what if you catch them in the actual act? I remember some months ago, an Asian woman was raped and beat to death in Flushing, apparently in a place that it could of been stopped.

Had this happened in Florida, and you catch him raping her, and you shoot the sob as he so rightly deserves, does that “prevent” further forcible harm, or is that also a “too late to prevent” scenario?

Below is a link to, as well as the actual article in its entirety.

Link to article

Use of Deadly Force for Lawful Self-Defense

In receiving a license to carry a concealed weapon for lawful self-defense, you are undertaking a great responsibility. A license to carry a concealed weapon is not a license to use it. I am sure you share my hope that you will never find it necessary to use a weapon in self-defense. If you do, the law will protect you only if you have acted within the law. Those who are choosing to arm themselves with weapons should, therefore, be armed with the most indispensable weapon of all knowledge.

We are providing this information to you as a service in pursuit of that goal. Only you can provide the wisdom, restraint, and good judgment that the law demands of those who possess the ability to take another human life.

Adam H. Putnam
Commissioner

A License to Carry a Concealed Weapon is not a License to use it.

This information was prepared by the Division of Licensing in an attempt to answer some of the most frequently asked questions about the use of deadly force for lawful self-defense. Included are examples of real situations involving the legal consequences of the use of deadly force.

Q. What kinds of weapons are included in the concealed weapons law?

A. The Jack Hagler Self-defense Act defines concealed weapons or firearms as follows: handguns, electronic weapons or devices, tear gas guns, knives and billies. The information provided emphasizes handguns, because they are one of the most commonly used weapons for self-defense.

Q. What if I am in my vehicle?

A. A person has no duty to retreat in his lawfully occupied vehicle against a person who was in the process of unlawfully and forcefully entering or had unlawfully and forcefully entered an occupied vehicle or had unlawfully and forcefully removed or was attempting to remove another against that person’s will from the occupied vehicle.

Q. When is a Handgun “Concealed?”

A. The Florida Legislature defines a concealed firearm as any firearm “carried on or about a person in such a manner as to conceal it from the ordinary sight of another person.” A person carrying a concealed firearm without a license is guilty of a felony of the third degree. The penalty for this offense is a prison term of up to five years.

Q. Are there special laws that apply to the use of Handguns?

A. Yes, special laws apply anytime anyone uses deadly force, whether or not the weapon is concealed. Florida law defines deadly force as force that is likely to cause death or great bodily harm. When you carry a handgun, you possess a weapon of deadly force. The law considers even an unloaded gun to be a deadly weapon when it is pointed at someone.

Q. When can I use my handgun to protect myself?

A. Florida law justifies use of deadly force when you are:

Trying to protect yourself or another person from death or serious bodily harm;
Trying to prevent a forcible felony, such as rape, robbery, burglary or kidnapping.
Using or displaying a handgun in any other circumstances could result in your conviction for crimes such as improper exhibition of a firearm, manslaughter, or worse.

Example of the kind of attack that will not justify defending yourself with deadly force: Two neighbors got into a fight, and one of them tried to hit the other by swinging a garden hose. The neighbor who was being attacked with the hose shot the other in the chest. The court upheld his conviction for aggravated battery with a firearm, because an attack with a garden hose is not the kind of violent assault that justifies responding with deadly force.

Q. What if someone uses threatening language to me so that I am afraid for my life or safety?

A. Verbal threats are not enough to justify the use of deadly force. There must be an overt act by the person which indicates that he immediately intends to carry out the threat. The person threatened must reasonably believe that he will be killed or suffer serious bodily harm if he does not immediately take the life of his adversary.

Q. What if someone is attacking me in my own home?

A. The courts have created an exception to the duty to retreat called the “castle doctrine.” Under the castle doctrine, you need not retreat from your own home to avoid using deadly force against an assailant. The castle doctrine applies if you are attacked in your own home by an intruder.

Q. What if I am in my place of business and someone comes in to rob me? Do I have to retreat before using deadly force?

A. The castle doctrine also applies when you are in your place of business. If you are in danger of death or great bodily harm or you are trying to prevent a forcible felony, you do not have to retreat before using deadly force in self-defense.

Q. What if I point my handgun at someone but don’t use it?

A. Never display a handgun to gain “leverage” in an argument. Threatening someone verbally while possessing a handgun, even licensed, will land you in jail for three years. Even if the gun is broken or you don’t have bullets, you will receive the mandatory three-year sentence if convicted. The law does not allow any possibility of getting out of jail early.

Example: In a 1987 case, a woman refused to pay an automobile mechanic who she thought did a poor job repairing her car. They argued about it, and the mechanic removed the radiator hose from the car so she couldn’t drive it away. She reached into her purse, pulled out an unloaded gun, and threatened to kill the mechanic if he touched her car again. The mechanic grabbed the gun and called the police.

The woman was convicted of aggravated assault with a firearm and sentenced to serve a mandatory three-year prison term. The fact that the gun was not loaded was irrelevant. Even though she was the mother of three dependent children and had no prior criminal record, the statute does not allow for parole. Her only recourse was to seek clemency from the Governor.

Q. When can I use deadly force in the defense of another person?

A. If you see someone who is being attacked, you can use deadly force to defend him/her if the circumstances would justify that person’s use of deadly force in his/her own defense. In other words, you “stand in the shoes” of the person being attacked.

Q. What if I see a crime being committed?

A. A license to carry a concealed weapon does not make you a free-lance policeman. But, as stated earlier, deadly force is justified if you are trying to prevent the imminent commission of a forcible felony. The use of deadly force must be absolutely necessary to prevent the crime. Also, if the criminal runs away, you cannot use deadly force to stop him, because you would no longer be “preventing” a crime. If use of deadly force is not necessary, or you use deadly force after the crime has stopped, you could be convicted of manslaughter.

Q. If I get a license to carry a concealed weapon, can I carry it anywhere?

A. No. To get a license you must sign an oath that you have read and understand the Jack Hagler Self-defense Act (Section 790.06, Florida Statutes). That statute lists several places where you may not carry a concealed weapon. You should read subsection 12 for a complete list, but some examples are football, baseball, and basketball games (college or professional) and bars.

A cool head and even temper can keep handgun carriers out of trouble. You should never carry a gun into a situation where you might get angry.

Summary

1. Never display a handgun to gain “leverage” in an argument, even if it isn’t loaded or you never intend to use it.

2. The amount of force that you use to defend yourself must not be excessive under the circumstances.

Never use deadly force in self-defense unless you are afraid that if you don’t, you will be killed or seriously injured;
Verbal threats never justify your use of deadly force;
If you think someone has a weapon and will use it unless you kill him, be sure you are right and are not overreacting to the situation.
3. The law permits you to carry a concealed weapon for self-defense. Carrying a concealed weapon does not make you a free-lance policeman or a “good samaritan.”

4. Never carry your concealed weapon into any place where the statute prohibits carrying it.

This is not a complete summary of all the statutes and court opinions on the use of deadly force. Because the concealed weapons statute specifies that concealed weapons are to be used for lawful self-defense, we have not attempted to summarize the body of law on lawful defense of property. This information is not intended as legal advice. Every self-defense case has its own unique set of facts, and it is unwise to try to predict how a particular case would be decided. It is clear, however, that the law protects people who keep their tempers under control and use deadly force only as a last resort.

I realize that human beings can never agree. Whether its about protestors, abortion, presidents, punishments for pedophiles, or a Florida shooting.

At some point today, my mind started playing a movie. The movie was not something I lived, just a movie compiled from information.

I thought of all the times I could have gotten shot in my life. But this time I was Trayvon, I was Trayvon Martin, and I was hit in the chest and dead.

When I lived this mental movie from that point, humanizing the person, friends and family affected, I felt awfully sad. I felt sad and helpless that life can be so easily taken away.

I didn’t see what happened, how it got to the point where I was shot in the chest, I just saw that I was shot and dying. My heart ached after those thoughts. No matter how we look at it, a life was loss, and no matter what, the loss of life is sad.

Shortly thereafter I became Zimmerman. I was turning myself in to the authorities. I feared for my life, I felt terrible about how many people wanted me dead and hated me. I felt horrible that I was in hiding and couldn’t even support myself. I can’t talk about his feelings of innocent or guilt, because I didn’t see what happened. All I saw was the reality that his life, along with his family’s was ruined. That and that a young man was dead.

That is the saddest thing here. You and I are so involved with the politics of it, the b.s and hype, that we forget. Many lives are affected, guilty or not.

A country is divided, and nothing changes that. People are calling for violence, rioting, all under the guise of justice. I see the posts on facebook, twitter, blogs. I see the angry, unreasonable, ignorant people posting, instigating for violence.

WHAT THE HELL DO YOU GAIN OUT OF A RIOT? Aside from destroying your own homes, neighborhoods, and hurting honest, hard working people and their businesses?

I hope that the truth comes out, before people start getting stupid. I hope that irrefutable proof of what happened, one way or the other is provided. I don’t want doubt, because doubt will provide either side the reason they need to act up. Although, if I were a betting man, I’d bet things will go really bad if Zimmerman is found innocent.

Then the extremists who are tired of being oppressed and killed will take to the streets. The death toll then goes higher and all is well. Right? I’m sure that’s what the community needs, more people dead, more violence and a great race war right? That’s what you want.

I only hope the truth comes out, without a hint of doubt, to finally get this thing resolved, it’s all one can pray for.

As I entered the F train, she was being dragged out by 2 friends. They
were asking us to pull the brakes on the train so that she gets help.
I saw some cops and realized they were already informed. So I remained
silent.

I entered the train and observed the cops trying to keep the woman
talking. I assume that they already called the paramedics as I saw
them on the radio. So I figure she’s in good hands, nothing we can do
at this point.

I simply look on in concern. I see some teenage girls laughing and it
appears they are making fun of the woman. I see the people around me,
and when we make eye contact they raise their eyebrows and make
annoyed expressions.

I don’t know the woman, or her condition, but it made me feel sad to
think that a human being in need provided comic relief to some, and
severe annoyance to others.

Is Dallas Watts right about humanity, are we that bad?

High school, a rite of passage. How you do in high school can and will have a major impact on your life. The S.A.T’s, overall grades, these impact whether or not you get into a great college or university. Theycan impact your bottom line is good grades can translate into money in the form of scholarships being made available to you.

That is all fine and nice, but for young people, social acceptance, you know, “being cool” is very important too. In many cases, it is more important to them than any of the aforementioned points.

As adults we may look back in hindsight and one may ask, “who cares what people think”? But think back to when you were in High School, you cared. If you did not, then you were part of a very small population.

There is no question that the teen years are an awkward age. Think on how the body is going through hormonal changes, voices are getting deeper, hair is sprouting in places that were bare, body parts are changing, and if that wasn’t challenging enough, couple that with hundreds of kids around you going through the same thing!

Now let’s complicate things a little more shall we? High school in the inner city, and make no mistake, by inner city I’m talking about the hood, the ghetto, gangsta’s paradise, poor neighborhoods in so called dangerous areas.

High school comes with a whole other set of challenges in these neighborhoods. At a recent forum there was a man speaking on how to succeed and stay out of trouble while in high school. The man spoke about team sports, track and field, swimming at the school, tennis and so on. Listening to this, any of the kids in these neighborhoods would laugh out loud and simply ask “what pool”, does he mean “The pompa”?

Most of the kids that are in your classrooms in these areas are kids that have been exposed to violence at a young age, they come neighborhoods where gangs are commonplace, and of course drugs are on the scene. Most of these kids has something to prove, a reputation, street credibility.

It’s a sad thing, but the school yard can be equated to a prison yard. There is a strict hierarchy, unofficial rules, and areas that you cannot walk through. The good kids are extorted for homework, money, lunch, and anything of value that they may possess. One could say that the school yard is a prepping ground for a prison yard. One can tell which of those kids will go on to do well in a prison yard a few years later.

If this sounds sad to you, that’s because it is sad, a sad reality. The question you should be asking yourself is “how do we change this”? That’s the million dollar question, a question that I do not have the answer to.

A Williamsburg woman named Aura recently wrote the chancellor of education requesting that something be done about the school situation. Her son was attacked and beat up by some punks because the boy refused drugs from them. How’s that for peer pressure? There was a time that you’d get teased for not being ”down”, or doing whatever everyone else was doing. These days they beat you up! The story has received some media attention, it is in Spanish, but if you would like to read the news article, CLICK HERE.

The response from the Chancellor at the DOE read along the lines of “Thank you for contacting the office of the school chancellor, rest assured that providing a place that fosters success, and ensuring student safety is our top priority. We have forward this to the right people. With that, we ask you to please contact your school principal and or local authorities regarding this matter with your son”.

The young man was transferred to another school because he feared for his safety. The problem is that these little punks all know each other, and it’s not very difficult figuring out what new school in the area a kid could go to. Now that aside, the young man now has to deal with making new friends, being the new kid, a new curriculum, along with his everyday pressures.

Is it no wonder that teenagers are angry at the world? People wonder how things like Columbine could happen.

Well, here is a prime example. Can you see how a young man going through this could simply snap one day. Because of those punks, his fragile world was turned upside down.

This is where parents like Aura come into play. Though there isn’t much we can do, writing letters, staying active, removing the kid from the source of violence, all these things help. And during that time it can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Give us your thoughts and ideas on how we can help our children succeed in this challenging environment. What can we as parents do to protect our children?

Sound off in the comments section.

So 78 year old Dallas Watts was on his way home from purchasing some treats for his dogs. Apparently his path was blocked and he was boxed in by some youths. Apparently Mr. Watts told the youths to think about what happened to Trayvon, he said “Remember Trayvon”. My guess is that this was a warning to them about randomly accosting people in the street. One of the kids was ordering the other ones to get him. At some point someone hit Mr. Watts behind the head causing him to fall down, then they proceeded to strike and kick him, they even went so far as drop kicking him. One of the kids involved was as young as 11 years old, while the oldest was 17.

If you’d like to see the video of Mr. Watts speaking with the press in Toledo, click here.

During their attack, Mr Watts said that the kids continued to scream “This is for Trayvon” and “Get that old white man, kill him”. One of them, apparently the not so stupid one from the bunch said “Don’t kill him or we all go to jail”. Now, this sounds like a hate crime to me if I ever heard of one. I mean, everyone is so into making everything about race, kicking a man and saying “kill that old white man” sounds to me about as much as anything can sound about race. The odd thing about this hate crime, and racist attack, is that the kids were white and black.

Mr Watts was visibly upset during the video interview, a peaceful man who didn’t even let his kids near guns said that he now has a different view of humanity. He will be applying for his concealed carry gun permit and will be purchasing a gun.

Hey punks, if your goal was to create a pissed off, 78 year old, nervous Vietnam Vet that will start to carry a gun, it looks like your objective has been achieved. Do you think he will be the only one doing it?

Now what happens when someone, possibly an innocent kid, comes too close to Mr Watts during his next shopping trip? It may be your brother, your cousin, who knows? What happens if because of this experience he literally jumps the gun and pumps the kid full of bullets? Will you be upset if he gets off on self defense? He was traumatized, he had reason to believe he would be attacked, see where I am going? You are giving descent people reasons to shoot and kill you.

So who’s to blame for that? Be careful what you start with your “retaliation” violence, because you may not be ready for what will come. Furthermore, what is the benefit of attacking individuals that had nothing at all to do with Trayvon Martin and his encounter with George Zimmerman? Wait for the case to be handled by the authorities, if Zimmerman truly did wrong, then it will be proven. Even if he gets off, I don’t see how beating up Mr. Watts achieves anything?

6 kids,11 through 17 years old attacking a 78 year old man is definitely not helping your cause, and mind you, it was a mix group, black and white kids. Makes absolutely no sense whatsoever. I wish they had run into the man in this picture, remember him? THE EPIC BEARD MAN. Or perhaps any combination of the men below…

“An assistant principal in the Bronx has been arrested and charged with sex abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child. The Department of Education says Joseph Ponzo worked at P.S. 106 in Parkchester and made more than $117,000 a year. The 59-year-old turned himself in to the authorities amid allegations he forcibly touched last week two girls, ages 10 and 11. Sources say the alleged incidents took place in P.S. 106.”

This animal deserves to have the book thrown at him, well he deserves a hell of a lot more than that! Not only did he, a 59 year old disgusting piece of crap touch these little girls, he did it while in a position of power and trust in the community. He wasn’t just a school teacher, he was an administrator! According to the report he is the 9th school official to be removed on some form of sex charge in a school against children.

I hope these animals get what they deserve, and then some. This is a crime I find very, very difficult to forgive, can you imagine how those little girls are scarred! I hope he’s going to jail for a long time, and I hope the boys in there hear about what he did, and then I hope he gets what he has coming to him!

Let me give you a little context about my circumstances. I am on a 2nd marriage, numero dos, my first marriage produced my reason for existing, my son, mi hijo. He lives with his mom, and spends weekends with me, holidays, etc. He happens to go to school right across the street from me. My school district is much better than his zone, so we enrolled him by me. Better school, greater chance of success. End context.

Every once in a while I see him on my walk to the subway as he walks to school. I always give him a kiss and a hug. This morning I was walking into the subway as he and his mom were exiting, so I quickly rubbed his head lovingly and kept moving, I didn’t get to hug him as any New Yorker knows that you don’t stop moving in crowded, morning rush hour stairwell traffic!

As I continued to walk, I felt bad. My son just walked by me and I didn’t get to hug him. My son who should be with his father always. When I reached the train station I pulled out my iPhone and considered going back to writing several of my potential articles:

“Breaking the chains, Latinos escaping the ghetto”

“Latinos in Corporate America”

“What about Traivon Martinez”

“Gun laws, could Latinos handle it”

But my thoughts are on my son, the little man with the “angry birds” shirt that just smiled at me, the little man whom just walked pass me on a subway stairwell. My son.

This moment I’m having with myself brings to light a much greater issue that we as a people face in this country. I was researching Latino divorce rates to present some facts and figures, and I found it intriguing that statistically our divorce rate is actually 2nd to Asians in this country. Various sources confirm that, some data is slightly old, yet this type of data usually takes years to compile.

As I was reading and researching this though, I realized that in order to get a divorce, you have to be married first. How many of our people actually get married? That being considered I decided that this was not a good measure of data for this article. Perhaps we are better suited to ask why according to the CDC over 50% of child birth among hispanics were from unmarried mothers?

Let’s move pass that and ask why are so many of us Latino men, and others alike not with our children? Be it due to divorce, separation, breaking up, or by some other circumstance like prison, drugs, many fathers are not with their children.

It’s a vicious cycle, I initially titled this “I am my father’s son” because my father did my mom wrong, he was unfaithful, they fought plenty and ultimately he was gone from our home. My dad became a weekend warrior dad, now fast forward some 25 years later, and here we are, like father like son. I only hope the chain stops here. As a father, nothing breaks my heart more, nothing stings and makes me feel the great slap of regret in life, than when my son asks me “why don’t we live together”. Or when I have to drop my son off and say goodbye to him, and walk away. It’s a heart wrenching feeling.

With each generation a family is supposed to improve. I did improve to a degree, yet I failed in others. I finished college, I have a great job, and though things got messed up at home, I am still a great father to my son. I am always present and I take great care of him. But isn’t a shame that in this society, people are surprised when a man says “I take care of my kids”. People have applauded me and said things like “Wow, you are a real man, you take care of your kids”. What do you mean, isn’t that what a father is supposed to do?

I read this article on the library of congress (don’t ask me why I was reading an article On the library of congress) where men in prison were provided with free greeting cards to send to their mothers, and nearly every man participated in this program. Later motivated by the turnout, the same thing was offered for fathers, nobody participated. Why is that? Because daddy wasn’t around, most of them didn’t know their fathers, is it no wonder that they ended up in prison? There is a direct correlation between absentee fathers and juvenile delinquents. It is a sad reality in this urban culture, and in our Latino culture. I could tell you so many cases where I know of men who are not there for their kids, at all. It’s disgusting.

Personally I can’t understand how a man can father a child and abandon them. Yes, I am divorced and I don’t live with my son, but my son knows me, he knows me well as his dad, as his father. I am his protector, his friend, confidant, advisor, and financial provider. I share these roles with his mother, along with the role of authority when he gets a little uppity and needs to be checked. He seems to fear and respect me more than he does anyone else, and that was earned with only words and actions, never violence. We tend to rely on power and intimidation to get what we want, but as a father, I have achieved my connection with my son through an open, honest relationship. Stern only when necessary, but regardless, mutual respect is always given. I respect my son, and he respects me, that respect further translates into a deeper connection and love for one another. My son and I have a very strong bond, one to rival many a parent that actually lives with their child.

My message to my brothers out there is the following: be a father, if you have a child then simply be a father. If you create a beautiful little nene or nena, be there for them. The kids need a father. I understand sometimes things don’t work out with a marriage, and I’m not questioning that. I know, I have been there, and your reasons are your reasons, but the kid is never at fault, and they should not suffer neglect or abandonment because you and mom split up. What I am saying, is regardless of what happens between you and your “baby’s mamita”, you should be there as a father for your hijos.

I want my son to have a bright future, I want him to go to college, I want him to succeed! I want my son to improve on my achievements. He carries the torch for my familia, he is the next generation, the next improvement. What better way to put the odds in his favor than being there for him, giving him all I can, even if I just give him a hug in the am on the way to our respective locations.

As people what can we do, to not only improve this condition among Latinos, but for society as a whole? Please sound off in the comments with any suggestions you may have, or any views you would like to contribute.

Stereotypes, some good, most bad, and most all can lead to hurt feelings. At some point or another we have all been guilty of them, myself and you reading this article right now! You know it.

I was talking with someone on twitter today who was told “She doesn’t act Puerto Rican!” Pardon me, how does a Puerto Rican act then?

“Mira nene ven paca y deja de joder, Mira, Mira, Mira, Mira”….

She’s a smart girl, educated, speaks proper English, and she writes poetry. That’s how we met, she saw me performing at a show some weeks ago. Perhaps she should of went all Ghetto Bronx Puerto Rican and slapped the crap out of the idiot that made the statement! Feel me?

Come on now people, stop acting like dumb focks!

So I was getting a massage yesterday, and from the other side I heard the guy and the girl in the other room, he said “You good in math right, because Orientals are good in math”, the lady just chuckled softly, and the one that was massaging me paused as she heard it too, then she saw me shaking my head. I said that guy is so damn ignorant, she agreed. I bet the girl massaging him also thought he was an idiot, but she couldn’t say anything because he was a customer.

I remember being called “wanna be white” and or a “sellout” for trying to walk the right path back in the days.

It’s a damn shame that stereotypes still classify an entire people and their behavior. We are all guilty of stereotypes, and the best we can do is to try and work pass those preconceived notions, and improve. If we keep it up, little by little as a society perhaps we can get rid of stereotypes altogether. This way, the George Zimmerman’s and the Trayvon Martin’s of the world won’t go around suspecting and ultimately harming each other.

So tell me, how is a Puerto Rican supposed to act? *pulls out the box cutter*
